He advised Prime Minister Gladstone regularly on Catholic affairs and was appointed to the House of Lords in 1869 for his service to the Liberal Party. Born into the English and Bavarian aristocracy, Lord Acton briefly served in parliament through the intervention of his stepfather, the English foreign minister Lord Granville. Yet it was Acton's passionate and insightful mind, speaking through historical essays, reviews, and correspondence--and not his undistinguished political career--that drew so much attention after the war. A learned historian who never wrote a book, Acton's academic career began late in life as Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University, where his magnificent library is now housed.
